Absentee Ballots
Absentee ballots must be received by a voter’s local clerk by 8 p.m. on Election Day to be counted, except military and overseas ballots, which must be postmarked on or before Election Day and received by the clerk within 6 days after the election.

I already voted. Can I change my vote?
Michigan law allows voters to “spoil” an absentee ballot and request a new one if they need to change their vote — whether because a candidate has dropped out or for any other reason.
If You Have Already Returned Your Absentee Ballot
Submit a signed, written request to your city or township clerk to spoil your original ballot.
- Clearly state whether you want a new absentee ballot mailed to you or if you will pick it up in person.
- The request must be received by your clerk by 5 p.m. on the second Friday before the election.
- In-person visits are recommended so you can receive your new ballot right away.
Note: There is no option to spoil a ballot that has already been received by the clerk during the mandatory early voting period or on Election Day.

If You Have Not Yet Returned Your Absentee Ballot
You have more flexibility:
- Visit your clerk’s office in person by 4 p.m. on the Monday before the election to spoil your ballot and vote a new one on the spot.
- You may also submit a signed written request by mail (earlier is better to allow processing time).
- On Election Day (or during early voting), you can bring your ballot to your polling place or early voting site, surrender it (or sign a statement that it was lost or destroyed), and vote a new ballot in person.

Important Notes
- Once a ballot is inserted into a tabulator at an early voting site or on Election Day, it cannot be spoiled or changed.
- Your clerk will mark the original ballot as “spoiled” so only the new ballot is counted.
- For fastest service, contact your local clerk directly.
